However, this is not always the case. Occasionally, specifics of the operation require unique geometry and lifting schemes that simply can not be satisfied without a special design. Whatever the situation, the employer does not need to compromise of employee safety. Always insist on systems that comply with the ASME standards. Your devices should be (1) designed by a qualified engineer, (2) supported by analysis to show that the design meets the structural requirements of the job, (3) design compliance proven by proper ASME markings that include load rating, manufacturer, serial number, service class, design category, (4) documented inspection and maintenance plan, and (5) evidence of proof load test to 125% of rated load. It is also a good idea to require a certified drawing (PE Stamped drawing of the device) that proves compliance to the standards. OSHA 1910, ASME B30.20, ASME B30.9, ASME B30.26.
